What Makes a Good Custody Lawyer?

Source: Lawyer Fact

Divorce is a tough situation alone, and child custody is generally the most contested issue in divorces.  Emotions run high and parents often inadvertently use their children as bargaining chips in achieving their goals.  A skilled and experienced custody attorney in Dayton can be the voice of reason and provide needed perspective during a custody battle.

Many qualities go into making a good custody lawyer

When looking for a good custody lawyer there are many factors to consider, including:

Experience:- When engaged in a custody dispute, an experienced custody attorney   is skilled in using custody laws to your advantage.  An experienced lawyer can handle the unexpected, and has the resources to assemble an effective team including investigators, expert witnesses, and medical experts to mount an effective case, if needed.

Success:- A custody attorney with a proven track record in custody disputes increases your chances of a successful outcome.  When consulting with custody attorneys ask them about their past successes in cases similar to yours.  If the attorney has handled similar cases and prevailed for other clients, it is likely they can do the same for you.

Focus:- Custody law is a specialized area.  A law firm with a specific focus on custody has the knowledge base and skills to effectively handle your case.

Skills:- Even a law firm with experience and focus in custody issues may not possess additional necessary skills.  For example, a firm with little or no negotiation experience may not be for you.  Depending on your circumstances you may need a strong litigation attorney who can prevail in court.  Additionally, attorneys with mediation accreditation and experience may be able to help you resolve your custody issues out of court, which can save time and money.

Take your personal feelings into account

The final element you want to consider is whether or not you like and feel comfortable with your attorney. It does not matter if he or she is the best lawyer in town if you do not get along or disagree with the advised approach to your case. Depending on your circumstances, you may spend a lot of time with your attorney over the coming weeks or months.  Better to spend that time with someone you like and respect.

Regardless of the circumstances of your custody issues, a skilled and experienced Dayton custody lawyer can provide valuable legal guidance in resolving your situation.

  1. Great article indeed. Would have been better if you could have focused some part on how to find a good lawyer too. I want to give some tips upon the same. So many people walk into a lawyer’s office and wait for them to ask the questions. The session turns into a reverse interview where the lawyer learns everything and you learn nothing. Have an extended list of questions prepared in advance of your meeting. Ask for cost estimates, approximations of how long the process takes, and what their strategy is for custody cases. If you interview at least three lawyers with this system then you should be able to easily eliminate one or two by simply comparing their answers.

  2. Discuss your objective of finding the best child custody lawyer with any family members, friends or colleagues who may have used such a professional in the past. Even in this high-tech age, word of mouth is a helpful way of identifying superior lawyers. This would be a great source to find a good lawyer.

  3. If you are in a child custody dispute, the best thing you can do to help yourself is to hire a good lawyer. Because child custody law is complicated, you need someone who knows the ins and outs of the law. You can find a good lawyer by asking family or friends for recommendation, and then asking lots of questions to make sure your lawyer can help you win your case.
